Plain dress shirts are simply solid color dress shirts. Blue and white dress shirts are typical as an office uniform while darker black, charcoal, and navy shirts are favorites at nightclubs. Light pastel colored dress shirts are making their way into the corporate world, but are more popular with the younger generation. Colors can be seasonal.
Here is a brief list of some of the most common solid color mens dress shirts.
White – There should be at least two white dress shirts in every man's wordrobe. This is the one shirt that you can wear to every occasion, from weddings to weekend yacht parties. It is the most sold dress shirt in the world and it matches every colored tie and suit. The white dress shirt is a bigger necessity than the women’s “little black dress”.
Blues – Light blues are probably the most versatile dress shirts, also a must have in every man’s wardrobe. The calmness of the color ensures that the wearer is trustworthy and professional. It is also the most used color in combination with white. Dark blues such as Navy and Ink Blue are also versatile. Though not as formal as light blue, they are more fun and mysterious than the black dress shirt.
Grey – The grey dress shirt is a slightly more sophisticated version of the light blue. It works in both formal and casual settings. The stillness of grey makes it a great canvas for other colors. Because it’s not as intense as black or white, it allows colored ties and other accessories to stand out in a not too bold way.
Black – A mysterious color that comes in many shades, the color instantly slims down the figure and adds a sense of style and class. Because they can have different underlying colors, it is hard to match black on black. Outdoors the color of black can vary significantly, but this is usually not noticeable indoors.
Yellows – Yellow dress shirts are a gamble, especially in the corporate world. It is a bright color that easily clashes with others. Yellow in its most mellow shade (pastel) is the best choice for dress shirts. When paired with charcoals and light greys it can become a great look for the spring.
